Cohen & Buckmann co-founding partner Carol Buckmann has published The Intelligent Fiduciary: Best Practices for Navigating ERISA’s Fiduciary Responsibilities, a plain-English guide for the people responsible for overseeing employee benefit plans.
The book is written for employers, plan committees, HR and benefits professionals, executives, trustees, advisers and others involved in running retirement, pension, 401(k), ESOP and welfare benefit plans.
Drawing on decades of experience advising fiduciaries, Carol explains what they need to know across the full range of issues they may face, from investments and service providers to cybersecurity, AI, audits and litigation. The book helps readers make thoughtful decisions, keep a clear record of their process and reduce risk for both the plan and its participants.
Carol wrote The Intelligent Fiduciary after finding that many existing fiduciary resources were either highly technical or too theoretical to help committee members understand what they should actually do.
“An intelligent fiduciary is not someone who knows every answer,” Carol said. “They are someone who puts participants first, follows a sound process, stays current and knows when to bring in outside expertise.”
